Those Paws are Made for Walking…

As I mentioned last time, I had been so busy with getting my investment advisory and financial planning practice valued, marketed and finally sold that I had not yet been able to process any of the videos I took while on my trip to Churchill, Manitoba last November.

While I am not yet fully retired as I am in the midst of transitioning my clients to my successors, I have now had some time to go through my videos. For some reason, I shot almost all of them in too short of clips. Maybe I was concerned about running out of card space, but that was dumb as I had brought a one terabyte backup unit with me. So, most of the videos are really not worth seeing.

However, I have one more I would like you to view that I think gives you a really good look at how those huge feet help the polar bears walk and maneuver in icy conditions. This is a very short clip, but take a look at how those feet work to keep our bear friend steady.

Go ahead and replay this short clip a few times to really take a look at how those huge feet and massive claws help these bears negotiate this ice covered pond.

Sorry about the jerky camera; many times we had to just jump out of the van in a heartbeat with our cameras at the ready to be able to catch a good shot, especially if the bears were being really active and rather close by.

Below I have a few still images of the bears using their massive feet to scale snowy rock faces, ice and more.

Here is a still shot showing a bear scaling a snowy rock ledge.
Like the video, this photo really shows how those big paws can dig into the sheer ice.
This shot gives you an idea about the difficult terrain that these bears call home.
This bear is pondering a route to the top. Believe it or not, it scaled that rock face in just a couple of minutes.
Here is our friend a couple of minutes later looking back toward us from the top of the rock wall.
Here is a near sunset view of the top of the area where we had been watching the bears rock climb.

Hopefully you have enjoyed the video and photographs of the polar bears making use of those huge paws. They are so perfectly adapted to the arctic terrain, whether that be negotiating sheer ice, climbing through deep snow, or scaling icy rock walls. It was just pure pleasure seeing these magnificent animals in their homeland.

I really appreciate you taking time to view my blog. Have fun out there, and be safe!
