I owe my followers an apology for the long delays between posts lately. I have just been really busy with work, and after long office days there just hasn’t been much motivation to spend more time at the computer processing photos and writing.

But, I don’t want to continue to disappoint, so here is a quick preview of my trip to the Washington coast last September.

US 101 runs north and south along the west coast of the United States. Astoria lies at the northwest corner of Oregon. This small seaside community is beautiful and full of history. Lewis and Clark wintered over near here after reaching the Pacific Ocean in November of 1805 from the begining of their journey in the midwest.

The Astoria-Megler Bridge across the Columbia River is over 3.5 miles (5.6 km) long. I have travelled across ths bridge many times, and a few times in some really rough weather while towing my camping trailer. Let’s just say that traversing this bridge keeps one wide awake!

Just a couple of miles from Baker Bay is Cape Disappointment Lighthouse sitting on the northwestern end of the Columbia River where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. The entrance to the Columbia River from the Pacific is one of the most treacherous waters in North America. Even today the lighthouse is a critical navigation aid for mariners entering the Columbia.

Farther north along the Washington coast is one of my favorite little towns – Westport, which sits at the southwest entrance to Gray’s Harbor. Westport is a fishing town, and the commercial marina is always a great place for photos.
